20 DAYS NORTH ISLAND KAPER

We have given you a more detailed overview of the first week . . . then the basic Itinerary after that. To get detailed Itineraries please go here

Day 01 Sept 10 - Auckland to Paihia

We all meet at the Auckland International Airport Car Rentals Department at 8.30am to collect your Hire Car for the Great Kiwi Kaper. Once you have accepted your car we'll head North via Titirangi (this is where we'll shout you your first New Zealand foodie delicacy, a cup of milky New Zealand coffee!). We will use this stop to check your cars are all okay before leaving on your great adventure.

We'll be driving to Paihia (PIE HEE AH), the center of the Bay of Islands. Your first days drive drive takes you from Auckland's wild and rugged West Coast, then cross over the island to take in the spectacular driving between Helena Bay to Russell on the Te Aroroa Highway into Russell, formerly known as the South Pacific's Hell Hole. Our waterfront accommodation is the Historic Russell Hotel. drive to Paihia and Auckland's rugged West Coast.

Day 02 - Paihia to Cape Reinga

For those wanting the Great Kiwi Kaper Cape Reinga To Bluff Tee Shirt, this is the day to get the Northern most point ticked off! Remember, when you pass the sign that says 'last chance for petrol' they ain't kidding! Make sure you have a full tank before departing.

Day 03 - Paihia to Opononi

We'll head over the range to the West Coast later today after a morning visit to New Zealand's most important historical site of Waitangi.  After that we'll get you out on the water to see The Hole In The Rock and the beautiful islands that are the Bay of Islands*

We'll stay the night in Opononi, a tranquil beach community opposite the largest Sand Dune in the Southern Hemisphere

Day 04 - Opononi to Thames

Visit Tane Mahuta, the King of the Forest while driving through a stunning patch of rainforest. There's an optional Kauri Museum visit if you would like to know the intimate history New Zealand and New Zealanders have with the might Kauri tree. Once we leave this area, we'll head south, bypassing Auckland to spend a night in Thames, which was originally going to be New Zealand's capital...that was of course until the gold suddenly ran out, followed by just about everything else. Thames is a microcosm of that booming period and now is the gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula.  We'll spend the night in the historic Junction Hotel in Thames. New Zealand's summer holiday playground, The Coromandel.  & an optional visit to the The Kauri Museum

Day 05 - Thames to Rotorua Via The Pacifc Coast Highway. A majestic coastal drive around the Coromandel Ranges. We'll head North up the Thames Coast Road to Coromandel then over the range to visit Cathedral Cove, famous for being the natural movie set In the Narnia trilogy.  Get your selfie and then just a 5-10 minute drive away, and do remember your togs, sand bucket and shovel, to dig your very own bath and experience the natural wonder that is Hot Water Beach.  For eating, there's many good quality options in all of these coastal towns.  When you've filled up, lets get going, we have the Coromandel Ranges to leave and the Kaimai's to see before reaching our destination of Rotorua. Time for a freshen up, a cuppa or cool one and a bite to eat before we're off for a wee walk amongst the giant Redwood Trees. This evening attraction is a must do in Rotorua.
